Japan is divided into nine political regions. They are further divided into 47 divisions. 43 of these are Prefectures (ken). The other four are Hokkaido District (do), Osaka and Kyoto Urban Prefectures (fu) and Tokyo Metropolis (to). The area around Osaka is often referred to as Kansai. The two maps below show the 47 divisions and the major cities.
